Pete Sessions Says There's 'A Lot Of Uncertainty' Surrounding House Speaker Race: 'People Are Skittish'

The race for the Speaker of the House is enveloped in uncertainty, according to Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), one of the eight candidates in the running.

Sessions revealed his concerns amid a House GOP meeting convened to listen to the third potential nominee.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty. There’s a lot that’s happening and people are skittish,” Sessions mentioned on NewsNation’s “The Hill” show ahead of the Speaker forum.

Sessions, a seasoned figure in the Republican party, led the National Republican Conference Committee (NRCC) in 2010. He believes his tenure, where he successfully led the party from a 40-seat deficit to a 63-seat gain, has equipped him with the necessary experience for the Speakership.

“The pitch is simple, I believe I have the experience… And if Republicans get together, we can achieve these,” he stated.

However, when asked if he saw himself as the next Speaker, Sessions was reluctant to confirm, stating, “It's hard to know. We’ve got to move through nine people, regional people, people in the committee.”

Following Rep. Dan Meuser’s (R-Pa.)exit from the race, eight lawmakers are now contending for the Speakership. The GOP conference held a Speaker forum on Monday evening to hear from the candidates before the internal election on Tuesday.

The House has been without a Speaker for almost three weeks after eight Republicans joined Democrats to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Since then, the GOP has presented two candidates and is now on the hunt for a third.
