Biden Teams Up With Saudi Crown Prince To Avert Broader Middle East Conflict
The U.S. President, Joe Biden, and Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, are actively working together to curb the expansion of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the White House announced.
The Hill reported that President Biden and the Crown Prince held a discussion on Tuesday, forging a consensus on the pursuit of comprehensive diplomatic measures to maintain regional stability and prevent the conflict from escalating.
Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza, initiated a lethal attack on Israel earlier this month, provoking retaliatory strikes from Israel. The United Nations has reported a death toll exceeding 5,000 in Gaza and 1,400 in Israel.
Despite the controversy surrounding the Saudi Crown Prince, Biden’s conversation with him is viewed as a critical strategy to avert a wider conflict and further unrest in the Middle East.
Biden had previously labeled Saudi Arabia as a “pariah” following the 2018 assassination of U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which U.S. intelligence agencies concluded was orchestrated by the Crown Prince.
The U.S. President’s communication with the Saudi Crown Prince also highlighted the importance of working towards lasting peace between Israel and Palestine once the current crisis subsides.
During their call, both leaders appreciated Egypt’s delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. However, they acknowledged the necessity for more aid to assist the affected civilians.
