Global Powers Pledge US, China, And EU Cooperation On AI Safety At UK Summit

At a summit in the United Kingdom., leaders from China, the United States, the European Union, and other countries decided to join forces to manage the risks associated with the rapid progression of artificial intelligence technologies.

What Happened: The summit, held at Bletchley Park, gathered tech and political leaders to deliberate on the safe future of AI. By the end of it, over 25 nations, including the U.S., China, and the EU, supported the “Bletchley Declaration,” pledging a collective approach to AI regulation.

Among those present were Elon Musk and CEO of ChatGPT-parent OpenAISam Altman, reported Reuters.

The two-day event was designed to identify common worries, enhance scientific understanding, and shape cross-country policies to mitigate potential risks.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak initiated the summit with the aim for Britain to serve as a post-Brexit mediator between the U.S., China, and the EU’s economic blocs.

During the summit’s opening, China’s Vice Minister of Science and Technology, Wu Zhaohui, expressed Beijing’s readiness to boost cooperation on AI safety and form an international “governance framework.”

Future AI Safety Summits will take place in South Korea and France at six-month intervals, as announced by British Digital Minister Michelle Donelan.

Why It Matters: The U.K.’s effort to convene essential players in AI safety occurs in the context of growing concerns about the technology’s effect on economies and societies, especially after the launch of Microsoft-backed (NASDAQ:MSFT) OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

These concerns are not confined to the U.K. Recently, U.S. President Joe Biden issued an executive order in response to the rapid rise of AI technologies like ChatGPT that have captured public attention.

On the other hand, AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li pointed out that the U.S. currently lacks the resources to keep up with the rapid pace of AI developments.
