Sundar Pichai Tells Google Employees In Leaked Memo More Job Cuts Are Needed In 2024 To Achieve 'Ambitious Goals': 'We Have To Make Tough Choices'

In a recent internal memo, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly informed the company’s employees to brace for more job cuts in 2024. This announcement follows a series of layoffs across various departments.

What Happened: Pichai, in an internal memo on Wednesday, warned of more cuts to come, reported The Verge. Since Jan. 10, Google has laid off over a thousand employees from different departments.

Pichai stated, “We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year. The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices.”

He explained that the layoffs are aimed at simplifying execution and driving velocity in certain areas. Pichai also noted that some teams will continue to make resource allocation decisions throughout the year, potentially impacting more roles.

Why It Matters: The recent layoffs are part of a broader trend at Google. The tech giant has been downsizing its workforce across various sectors, with a particular focus on AI and automation. This shift has led to job cuts in advertising sales, search, voice assistant units, hardware teams, shopping, maps, policy, core engineering, YouTube departments, and augmented reality divisions.

Pichai acknowledged that these changes are not as extensive as last year’s 12,000 job cuts but admitted that more “role eliminations” are on the horizon.

The recent layoffs are also the largest since January 2023, impacting over 1,000 employees, including non-hardware teams like Assistant and core engineering departments. The company’s decision to cut jobs is in line with its ongoing efforts to streamline operations and focus on AI-driven solutions.
