Is The Market Open On Presidents' Day?

U.S. stock markets, including the NASDAQ and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), are closed on Monday, Feb. 19, in commemoration of George Washington's birthday, widely recognized as Presidents' Day.

Markets are set to resume operations on Tuesday, Feb. 20, following the holiday break.

Additionally, the U.S. bond market will also halt on Presidents' Day, adhering to the schedule outlined by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Presidents' Day, celebrated annually, is part of the Uniform Holiday Bill signed in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, designed to create more three-day weekends for the nation's workers by ensuring that certain federal holidays, including Presidents' Day, fall on Mondays.

This year's observance marks the third closure of the 2024 holiday schedule for the stock markets, following New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The next market closure will be on Friday, March 29, in observance of Good Friday.

This year, the stock market will also close on the following days: Memorial Day on May 27, Juneteenth on June 19, Independence Day on July 4, Labor Day on Sept. 2, Thanksgiving on Nov. 28 and Christmas on Dec. 25.
