Marjorie Taylor Greene Says Mike Johnson's Speakership Is 'Over' After House Passes Ukraine Aid Package: 'Resign And Allow Us To Move Forward'

In a recent development, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has called for the resignation of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) following the House’s approval of a new aid package for Ukraine. Greene has accused Johnson of betraying Republican voters and has threatened to initiate a vote for his removal if he doesn’t step down.

What Happened: Greene’s demand for Johnson’s resignation comes in the wake of the House’s approval of a $95 billion foreign aid package, which includes $61 billion for Ukraine and regional partners. Johnson, who had previously resisted putting a foreign aid bill on the House floor, joined Democrats to advance the bill, which is now headed to the Senate for final approval, reported CNN.

“Mike Johnson's speakership is over. He needs to do the right thing to resign and allow us to move forward in a controlled process. If he doesn't do so, he will be vacated,” said Greene, according to the report.

Greene, along with at least two other Republicans, has expressed support for a move to oust Johnson. Despite this, Johnson remains confident, believing he can count on cross-party support to quash any motion to vacate the speaker's chair.

Why It Matters: This isn’t the first time Greene has criticized Johnson’s leadership. Earlier this month, she called Johnson a "damn fool" over his stance on Ukraine funding on Steve Bannon‘s podcast. Greene expressed the sentiments of her constituents, who she said were "so angry" with Johnson.

Greene had taken a step back in her effort to remove Johnson, stating that she would consult with her fellow House Republicans before deciding whether to proceed with a vote to remove him, according to another Benzinga article.
