Sam Altman Teases GPT-5: OpenAI's GPT-4 'The Dumbest Model' People Will Have To Ever Use Again, Says CEO

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made a bold statement about the future of the company’s AI models, hinting at major developments of GPT-5 and a massive investment in artificial general intelligence (AGI.)

What Happened: Altman, speaking at the Entrepreneurial Thought Leader (ETL) event at Stanford University, referred to GPT-4 as “the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use again."

Altman’s remarks indicate an anticipated rapid progression in AI capabilities, with each new model surpassing its predecessors significantly.

He also hinted at significant developments in future versions of its AI model. “GPT-5 is going to be a lot smarter than GPT-4. GPT-6 is going to be a lot smarter than GPT-5, and we are not near the top of this curve.”

OpenAI rolled out a majorly improved GPT-4 Turbo model in April.

Altman, who has been vocal about the potential of AGI, expressed his willingness to invest a substantial amount in its development.

"Whether we burn $500 million a year or $5 billion or $50 billion a year I don’t care, I genuinely don’t as long as we can I think stay on a trajectory where eventually we create way more value for society than that."

Why It Matters: Altman’s comments align with his previous statements about the future of AI.

In an interview with Stanford, he emphasized his unwavering commitment to the AGI project, regardless of the financial implications. His latest remarks further underscore OpenAI’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of AI technology.

Despite his criticism of previous models, Altman has shown a soft spot for the GPT-2 language model. This indicates a continuous evolution and improvement in AI technology, with each new model surpassing its predecessors.
