Donald Trump Downplays Allies' Roles in World Wars, Credits US for Victories: 'We Won Both Wars, Nobody Was Close To Us'

In a recent post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump claimed that the United States played a significantly larger role in winning both World Wars than its allies.

What Happened: Trump stated on the Truth Social post, “Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II.”

The former President’s remarks have drawn criticism, with detractors arguing that they overlook the substantial sacrifices and pivotal roles played by other Allied nations including the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom.

Historians have highlighted that the victory in WWII was achieved through cooperation, shared sacrifice, and a multinational alliance.

Trump’s post, which garnered over 14,000 likes on Truth Social, also suggested renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I.

“I am hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I. We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance. We are going to start celebrating our victories again!” Trump said.

Critics caution that such rhetoric could potentially strain diplomatic relations and oversimplify a multifaceted global conflict.

Why It Matters: This is not the first instance of Trump’s remarks on history or alliances causing controversy. During his tenure as President, he often had disagreements with NATO leaders and accused allies of not fulfilling their defence spending obligations.

His recent comments on WWII victory could potentially reignite debates on international alliances and the shared history of global conflicts.
