Navistar's quarterly net profit surged to $1.4 billion, or $18.24 per share, from $117 million, or $1.56 per share, in the year-ago period. Navistar's adjusted earnings came in at $0.79 per share. Its sales and revenue climbed 9.8% to $3.54 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $1.28 per share on sales of $3.47 billion. Navistar projects adjusted earnings for the fiscal year between $5 and $6 per share, versus analysts' estimates of $5.58 per share.
Layne Christensen Co (NASDAQ: LAYN) reported a 65% rise in its fiscal second-quarter earnings. Layne Christensen reported its quarterly profit at $10.6 million, or $0.54 per share, up from $6.5 million, or $0.33 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue surged 16% to $295.1 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.46 per share on revenue of $267 million.
Talbots Inc (NYSE: TLB) reported a wider-than-expected second-quarter loss on Wednesday. Talbots posted a quarterly loss from continuing operations of $37.4 million, or $0.54 per share, versus a year-ago profit of $521,000, or $0.01 per share, in the year-ago period. On an adjusted basis, Talbots posted a loss of $0.51 per share. Its net sales dropped around 10% to $271.1 million. However, analysts were expecting a loss of $0.45 per share on revenue of $263.4 million.
FuelCell Energy Inc (NASDAQ: FCEL) reported a narrower fiscal third-quarter loss. FuelCell Energy posted a quarterly loss of $7.75 million, or $0.07 per share, versus a year-ago loss of $13 million, or $0.15 per share. Its revenue climbed 65% to $31.2 million. However, analysts were expecting a loss of $0.09 per share on revenue of $29 million. FuelCell Energy's product sales surged 81% to $29.4 million.
Conn's Inc (NASDAQ: CONN) reported a stronger-than-expected adjusted quarterly profit and issued upbeat full-year earnings forecast. Conn's reported a Q2 loss of $3.4 million, or $0.11 per share, versus a year-ago profit of $1.6 million, or $0.06 per share. Excluding items, Conn's earnings came in at $0.17 per share. Its revenue declined 13.5% to $184.4 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.11 per share on revenue of $184.8 million. Conn's projects earnings of $0.65 to $0.75 per share for the full year, versus analysts' estimates of $0.54 per share.
Sycamore Networks Inc (NASDAQ: SCMR) swung to a fiscal fourth-quarter loss on Wednesday. Sycamore Networks posted a quarterly loss of $3.6 million, or $0.13 per share, versus a year-ago profit of $521,000, or $0.02 per share. Excluding items, Sycamore Networks' loss came in at $0.09 per share. Its revenue dropped 41% to $13 million. However, analysts were expecting a loss of $0.12 per share on revenue of $12 million.
VimpelCom Ltd (NYSE: VIP) reported a 29% y/y decline in its Q2 consolidated net profit. VimpelCom's quarterly net profit dropped to $239 million. Its quarterly revenue came in at $5.5 billion. On a pro-forma basis, VimpelCom's net profit climbed 42% y/y to $312 million, versus analysts' estimates of $556.5 million. Its pro-forma revenue surged 9% to $6 billion. Earnings before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) came in at $2.37 billion.
Viterra Inc (OTC: VTRAF) reported a strong rise in its third-quarter earnings. Viterra reported its quarterly earnings at C$123.2 million, or 33 Canadian cents per share, up from C$63.5 million, or 17 Canadian cents per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue climbed to C$3.55 billion from C$2.49 billion. However, analysts were expecting a profit of 30 Canadian cents per share on revenue of C$2.964 billion. Earnings before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) surged 28% to C$252 million.
