How Disney Won E3 2012

Share:
Forget about the oversized booths and game displays at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. The most exciting news to come out of E3 this week involves a movie from Disney (NYSE: DIS) that was wholeheartedly inspired by video games.

Due to hit theaters on November 2, Wreck-It Ralph is funny, inspired, and looks to be a wildly entertaining flick that will appeal to gamers everywhere. In other words, it's the perfect kind of announcement to come out of E3. (After showing the trailer to several friends and colleagues, that assessment seems to be accurate.)

Unfortunately, it is just a movie. While there will surely be a Wreck-It Ralph game, and while Disney deserves all the credit in the world for producing a film with the best cameos ever conceived, it is pretty sad that an actual game or game machine wasn't more exciting.

But with Wii U's depressingly bad presentation, and with Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) focused on interface and connectivity more than anything else, Wreck-It Ralph's impressive E3 debut isn't all that surprising.

However, I would like to know one thing: if the writers and animators behind Wreck-It Ralph can produce something so darn impressive, why can't the people behind the games that inspired this film do the same?
