Smartphones Account for 40 Percent of Total Mobile Users, 40 Percent Own Android
The Nielsen Company released new data Thursday showing that U.S. mobile phone users are beginning to adopt smartphones more and more.
The charts show that smartphone owners now account for 40 percent of the total U.S. mobile phone usage while the remaining 60 percent of users still use feature phones. Of the smartphone owners, the Android operating system leads the way with 40 percent marketshare. Apple's iPhones are second, which run iOS, followed by RIM's Blackberry. All data is as of July 2011.
Nielsen has also released data on users who are most likely to get a new smartphone in the next year. The report says that one-third of respondents said they will buy an Android device and one-third will buy an iPhone.
Nielsen has also listed consumers in different categories based on how innovative they are, showing how fast they will be to embrace new smartphones. The next desired operating system for the, "innovators," is Android with 40 percent. In addition, the "late adopters," or those who are least likely to buy new smartphones soon are still most likely to buy an Android device. Those late adopters are also not sure with what they want exactly with 30 percent in that category.
