Tesla Gigafactory Berlin Is Having Trouble Making Car Batteries

Back in September 2020, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) first announced its new 4680 battery cells during Battery Day.

The new cells were said to bring faster charging, more longevity and decreased costs. Fast forward to today, and it seems the production ramp of the cells isn't going as Tesla had hoped.

As shared by Electrek, Tesla is having trouble producing its new 4680 battery cells at Gigafactory Berlin and is moving some of that production equipment to Gigafactory Texas.

The 4680 cells are currently being installed in the Model Y and are planned to be used in the upcoming Cybertruck and Tesla Semi. 

It was thought at first that the equipment was being moved due to lower costs and available tax credits in the U.S. pertaining to manufacturing. But other reasons include a delay in the technique used to produce the cells.

Tesla is still confident it can achieve volume production by the end of 2022. In the meantime, Tesla can use its already ramped 2170 cells to fill some of the gap.
