Increase your investing knowledge and experience and network with some of the world's most prolific investors at this year's conference in New York.

Scheduled to take place on October 17 and 18 at the Marriot Marquis in New York City, the seventh annual Value Investing Congress is a one-stop-shop for value investors. The conference and advanced seminar (which is scheduled to take place on October 16) promise to bring the world's most serious and sophisticated value investors together with the primary goal of sharing investment wisdom.

As explained on its website, “The goal of the Value Investing Congress is to create a thriving community of value investors.”

“This Congress is a rich opportunity to meet with other serious investors and benefit from sharing ideas and experiences. Your next great idea may be waiting for you at the Value Investing Congress!”

During the interactive sessions at the conference, value investors will learn how to:

  • Assess intrinsic value to invest with a large margin of safety
  • Appraise management's capital allocation decisions
  • Avoid costly mistakes most investors make
  • Differentiate a true competitive moat from a short term advantage
  • Detect “hidden” red flags in financial statements
  • Identify profitable shorts
  • Uncover value in international markets
  • Identify opportunities for activist investing to catalyze value
  • Make behavioral finance work for you
  • Use long-dated call options (LEAPs) as an investment tool
  • Analyze and realistically value distressed debt

Bill Ackman, the founder of Pershing Square Capital Management, and James S. Chanos, the founder and President of Kynikos Associates, are among the speakers at the event. Ackman, who was added to the board of J.C. Penney Company (NYSE: JCP) earlier this year, founded Pershing Square in 2004 with just $54 million. The hedge fund now has over $10 billion under management. Chanos, meanwhile, is in charge of the largest investment firm devoted exclusively to short selling.

Leon Cooperman, the founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Omega Advisors, Inc., will also speak at the Value Investing Congress, along with James Crichton and Adam Weiss, who co-founded and serve as co-portfolio managers of Scout Capital Management. Alexander Roepers (founder and President of Atlantic Investment Management), Joel Greenblatt (a managing partner at Gotham Capital), Michael Kao (founder and Portfolio Manager of Akanthos Capital Management), and Guy Gottfried (founder of Rational Investment Group) will also speak at the event.

Glenn Tongue and his always outspoken T2 Partners co-manager, Whitney Tilson, round out the list of speakers scheduled for this year's Value Investing Congress.
