4 Suppliers The NYPD Could Choose For Its Long-Delayed Body-Cam Pilot Program
The New York Police Department has been pushing off a body camera pilot program since it was ordered to do so by a Manhattan federal court judge in August 2013.
According to a report by NY Daily News, the police department hasn't yet found a partner that could supply the large-scale project which involves around 1,000 cameras. The report added a supplier could be picked by mid-to-late August and a contract could be registered four to six months later.
The supplier will be expected to deliver tailor-made cameras with NYPD-specific software.
NYPD's Options
The NY Daily News didn't mention any companies that could be awarded the potentially lucrative supplier contract. However, some of the companies who operate in the law enforcement body camera space are well known to many investors.
Here are some of the more recognizable names in the security and law enforcement space.
Image Sensing Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISNS) develops video and radar processing products for the use in traffic, security police and parking applications.
Digital Ally, Inc. (NASDAQ: DGLY) produces video imaging and storage products for the use in law enforcement applications. The company has previously been awarded with contracts from police departments across the U.S for body-worn cameras.
Vicon Industries, Inc. (NYSE: VII) develops video management software that is used in security, surveillance, safety and control applications.
Finally, TASER International, Inc. (NASDAQ: TASR) expanded outside of its line of non-lethal electric weapon system and created the Axon business which focuses on wearable, cloud and mobile products for law enforcement agencies. The company is no stranger with some of the world's largest police forces as it sold 22,000 body cameras to the police force in London, England in 2015.
