Marvel Rivals Creators Were Banned From Making Negative Reviews, NetEase Apologizes

Marvel Rivals, a Marvel-themed team-based hero shooter akin to Overwatch, faced backlash when content creators participating in a closed alpha test revealed a restrictive clause in their contracts preventing them from making negative comments about the game.

Streamer and former professional Overwatch player Brandon Larned, known as Seagull, shared this clause on Twitter, IGN reported.

“Extremely disappointed in Marvel Rivals,” Larned wrote. “Multiple creators asked for key codes to gain access to the playtest and are asked to sign a contract. The contract signs away your right to negatively review the game. Many streamers have signed without reading just to play. Insanity.”

The response to this revelation was predominantly critical, with developer NetEase Inc (NASDAQ:NTES) receiving backlash for attempting to stifle constructive criticism.

NetEase’s Apology

In response, NetEase issued an apology, acknowledging the negative impact of the clause on creators and players. “We sincerely apologize for the confusion, suspicion, and frustration caused by these excessively restrictive terms and thank you for sharing with us.”

In their statement, NetEase clarified that the Content Creator Program aimed to support creators in producing quality content by providing resources. They stressed the importance of honest feedback, including both positive and negative comments, in improving the gaming experience for players.

Moreover, NetEase assured that they were revising the contract to be less restrictive and more supportive of creators’ freedom of expression, stating: “We cherish and appreciate every suggestion given by our players and always respect your feedback.”

Despite the controversy, Marvel Rivals continues to generate anticipation as a 6v6 team-based free-to-play shooter featuring beloved Marvel characters like Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange.

The game promises a multiversal adventure with an initial roster including iconic heroes and villains from various Marvel franchises. A release date for Marvel Rivals is yet to be announced.
