iPhone 5's Biggest Threat to Debut in Germany

Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) flagship device is scheduled to receive a new competitor on Thursday when Samsung unveils the next iteration of the Galaxy S III.

Unofficially referred to as the Galaxy S III Mini, the new device first hit the rumor mill after a photo of an event invitation appeared online. The invitation claimed that Samsung planned to hold an event in Germany this month to make a big announcement. Many bloggers were skeptical, particularly because the invitation had creases all over it (to cover up any Photoshop errors, some critics surmised).

Android developers disagreed with that assessment. They told Trip Chowdhry, the Managing Director of Equity Research at Global Equities Research, that the Galaxy S III Mini is real.

According to a ZDNet translation of a News24 report, Samsung Mobile's chief has confirmed the existence of the device and announced that it will be unveiled this Thursday in Germany.

Further evidence was revealed this morning when German tech site MobileGeeks published a couple of leaked images of the device, which appears to be a pint-sized replica of the original Galaxy S III. According to the site, the Galaxy S III Mini will come with a dual-core processor, a four-inch AMOLED display (800x480), a five-megapixel camera, one gigabyte of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.
