Amazon Added To List Of Companies On NOAA Project
Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) added its name to a list of companies collaborating with a government science agency that wants to boost the utility of its data.
Amazon's web services unit said it signed an agreement with the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration to expand availability of data via the Cloud.
Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Similar agreements with NOAA have been signed by Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) and others.
NOAA says the project aims to publish NOAA's vast data resources, "positioning them near cost-efficient high performance computing, analytic, and storage services provided by the private sector."
NOAA's public website already includes a wealth of information including weather forecasts, climate records, environmental information, history and biology.
Amazon said it will work with collaborators including The Weather Company, ESRI, Planet OS, and others will look for ways to push more of NOAA's data to the cloud, with a focus on spurring innovation and building a healthy and vibrant ecosystem around the data.
