Motif: Apple Tops In Wearables Market Opportunity
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL)'s market opportunity for wearable devices tops all competitors on a list of 25 companies compiled by the online trading platform Motif Investing.
Apple, whose wearable devices are limited to the Apple Watch, got a weighting of 14.7 percent on a list of 25 companies who make products or components in the category.
Motif says weighting are based on its assessment of a company's total market opportunity related to wearable devices.
Although wearables may get widely adopted by consumers, Motif warned that its also possible that the concept could flop on limited utility.
Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), which makes a line of smartwatches and fitness devices in addition to other products, came in second on Motif's list, with a weighting of 12.3 percent.
Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL), which put its Google Glass on ice earlier this year, still offers operating systems on which many smart devices are based. Google got a weighting of 9.8 percent on Motif's list.
Fourth on the list comes chipmaker Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) with a weighting of 7.7 percent, beating out GoPro Inc (NASDAQ: GPRO)'s 5.7 percent.
All other companies on Motif's list are component makers and got weightings for wearables opportunity of under 5 percent.
