Samsung Wants Piece Of Microsoft's Smartglasses Action

Share:

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (OTC: SSNLF) wants a piece of the action from Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT)'s smartglasses product that is set to soon hit the market.

Microsoft unveiled the HoloLens virtual reality product in January with a launch expected later this year. The company sees gaming as perhaps the product's largest potential market.

But a report Wednesday said Samsung is seeking a partnership with Microsoft (MS) that would focus on medical applications for the device.

"Samsung has been looking for opportunities to manufacture innovative, pioneering products," an unidentified Samsung source told the Korea Times.

"Hololens is a key technology for healthcare and medical devices," according to the source, who also cited the 3D printing industry.

Financial terms of the potential partnership and other details weren't mentioned.

Samsung agreed in March to pre-install Microsoft services and applications on Galaxy smartphones and Samsung tablets.

Shares of Microsoft are up about 3 percent year-to-date.
