Brexit Opponents Launch Their Campaign

British Prime Minister David Cameron was elected on promises to overhaul the terms Britain's membership in the EU and hold a referendum vote to allow voters to decide whether or not they want to remain a part of the Union. Upon beginning his term as Prime Minister, Cameron set to work negotiating the UK's membership, but worries about how a referendum vote might end have begun to surface.

Cameron is hoping that he can secure new membership terms that will protect the British pound as a legitimate currency and give the Britain more power over decisions made within the EU. However, if those demands are not met, a British exit from the Eurozone could become a very real possibility.

Anti-Brexit

While much of the media in the UK has focused on the benefits of leaving the EU behind, a group in support of staying in the EU launched its own campaign on Monday in order to educate voters on the drawbacks of leaving the Union. The movement, called Britain Stronger In Europe, highlights the benefits of remaining a part of the EU and hopes to persuade voters away from voting down EU membership in a referendum that could take place as early as next year.

Big Names

Several high profile business leaders and politicians have lent their names to the campaign, as they say leaving the EU would harm the British economy. Former UK Prime Ministers John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have all endorsed the campaign and Labour Party politician Will Straw is heading up the group as Executive Director.
