iPhone 7 May Have A Glass Casing, Report Says

What's another trading day without a fresh iPhone 7 rumor?

Nikkei Asian Review, citing a quote from the CEO of a key Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) supplier, reported that Apple has decided to change its iPhone casings from metal to glass to better differentiate itself.

The supplier, Catcher Technology, provides Apple with the metal casing used in its phones. The company's CEO Allen Horng was quoted as saying, "As far as I know, only one [iPhone] model will adopt glass casing next year," Horng told reporters after the annual shareholder meeting on Thursday. "I don't think this move will have an impact on Catcher's revenue as glass casing still needs a durable metal frame which requires advanced processing technology and would not be cheaper than the current model."

As noted by Mac Rumors, Apple used glass for the body of its iPhones up until 2011. The popular all-things-Apple blog suggested that the company could pair the iPhone's glass body with an edge-to-edge OLED display with a Touch ID sensor embedded into the glass and create a "sleek, all-glass look."

The blog also suggested that all of the "major changes" rumored for the iPhone will prompt Apple to name the device the iPhone 8 rather than iPhone 7 to "denote its status as a significant upgrade."
