Apple Fined $19M By Brazilian Court For Selling iPhones Without Chargers

The Sao Paulo court fined Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) for selling iPhones without the power adapter.

What Happened: A Brazilian court has fined Apple 100 million reais ($19 million) in a case filed by the association of borrowers, consumers and taxpayers, accusing the Cupertino-based company of committing abusive practices by selling iPhones without a charger.

The court has ruled that battery chargers must come with new iPhones sold in the country, reported Reuters.

"It is evident that, under the justification of a 'green initiative,' the defendant imposes on the consumer a required purchase of charger adaptors that were previously supplied along with the product," the court's decision read, according to the report.

Apple will appeal the decision. Apple did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.

Why It's Important: In the past, it was reported that Apple saved $6.5 billion by removing chargers and earphones from its iPhone packaging.

The company said the reasoning behind the decision is to reduce annual carbon emissions by two million tons.
