Economic Stability In US-China Relations Is 'What The World Expects From Us,' Says Gina Raimondo

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo emphasized the importance of robust economic ties between the U.S. and China amidst political tensions, South China Morning Post reported.

Raimondo and her Chinese counterpart, Wang Wentao, met to discuss ways to strengthen the economic relationship between the two countries. Raimondo became the fourth U.S. official to visit China.

"It's a complicated relationship; it's a challenging relationship. We will, of course, disagree on certain issues, but I believe we can make progress if we are direct, open, and practical,” Raimondo said.

As part of their efforts to build trust, the two sides agreed to establish a new government and private sector working group. The group plans to meet bi-annually to address commercial, trade, and investment issues, starting in Washington in early 2024.

Raimondo and Wang also agreed to create a review mechanism concerning U.S. export control enforcement to reduce misunderstandings about U.S. national security policies.

Two additional steps were agreed upon, including holding technical discussions to protect trade secrets and confidential business information, and regular communication at the secretary and minister level.

During their meeting, Raimondo stressed the importance of a “stable economic relationship” and “healthy competition” with China. Wang, on the other hand, emphasized mutual respect as a basis for their business cooperation.

On Tuesday, Raimondo is scheduled to visit Shanghai, where she will deliver a speech at a women’s event and visit New York University Shanghai and Boeing Shanghai.
