US Strikes Iranian Bases In Syria In Retaliation For Attacks On American Troops

The U.S. retaliated against Iran by launching airstrikes on two Iranian facilities in Syria. This action follows a series of assaults against U.S. troops in the region.

What Happened: The Pentagon confirmed that President Joe Biden ordered these “self-defense airstrikes” on weapons and ammunition storage areas in eastern Syria, operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliates, reported The Hill.

The strikes were executed early Friday using two F-16 fighter jets near Al Bukamal, Syria, near the Iraq border. Details regarding the origin of the fighter jets were not disclosed by the officials.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that these strikes were in response to a sequence of ongoing attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria, primarily orchestrated by Iranian-backed militia groups since Oct. 17.

The Pentagon revealed that U.S. and coalition forces had been attacked at least 19 times in the Middle East since last week, including four times in Syria and 12 times in Iraq, with three new assaults on Thursday.

According to the Pentagon, although the perpetrators of these assaults, which comprise drones and rockets, have not been identified, Iran is suspected to be behind them.

21 American troops have suffered minor injuries from these attacks, predominantly traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Furthermore, a U.S. citizen contractor suffered a fatal heart attack during a false alarm at al-Asad Airbase in Iraq.

The Department of Defense (DOD) emphasized that the U.S. “does not seek conflict and has no intention nor desire to engage in further hostilities,” but warned that the Iranian-backed attacks “are unacceptable and must stop.”
