Biden's Foreign Policy Challenges Mirror That Of Jimmy Carter's Ahead Of 2024 Re-Election Bid

Parallels between the foreign policy challenges faced by President Joe Biden and former President Jimmy Carter are becoming increasingly noticeable as Biden gears up for re-election.

Biden’s presidency has been marked by three major overseas crises: the disorganized American withdrawal from Afghanistan, Russia’s incursion into Ukraine, and the risk of a regional war in the Middle East. These events have led to a sense of global instability, evoking a sense of fear and economic anxiety among many Americans, according to an analysis by Axios.

Similar to Carter’s situation, Biden is grappling with foreign policy crises that are threatening his political standing. Carter’s re-election bid was heavily impacted by the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and the ensuing hostage situation, along with the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.

Presently, Biden is confronted with conflicts involving Hamas and Israel in the Middle East and in Ukraine by Russia, while American hostages remain in captivity. This has stirred concerns of America’s ability to deter its adversaries.

Furthermore, Biden is witnessing a decline in support from a crucial segment of the Democratic coalition: the young, progressive voters. Despite the majority of the Democratic voters siding with Israel, opposition is concentrated among the youngest voters, leading to a potential fracture in his support base.

Another similarity between Biden and Carter is the apprehension about their ability to handle the job. For Carter, it was his political inexperience, while for Biden, it is his age and ability to cope with the demands of the presidency.

Regardless, Biden remains hopeful to regain public support through effective responses to these crises. However, with the increasing isolationism and dismissiveness of America’s role as a guarantor of global security, he will need to convince Americans that he is up to the task.
