Is Edward Snowden Free? Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey's Cryptic Posts Spark Speculations About NSA Whistleblower

Twitter (now X) co-founder Jack Dorsey has made two cryptic posts on the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, likely alluding to Edward Snowden gaining his freedom after escaping to Russia 11 years ago.

What Happened: Former National Security Agency (NSA) consultant and whistleblower Snowden could have regained his freedom if Dorsey's posts are anything to go by.

In two consecutive posts, Dorsey said "free" and that the algorithm on X is so good now, that "following is just signaling."

Curiously, Dorsey has almost completely trimmed the list of people he's following – even Musk didn't make the cut. At the time of writing, Snowden is the only user Dorsey is following on X.

While it's not clear exactly what Dorsey means with his two posts and culling the entire following list to include only Snowden, there could be a relation between his posts and the following list.

Dorsey did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for comment.

Snowden, too, follows only one user, and unironically, it's the official NSA account.

Dorsey also changed his bio to include only his public key for Nostr, a decentralized social media protocol.

Why It Matters: Snowden and Dorsey have shared some common beliefs in the past. Both the tech personalities have echoed similar sentiments about multiple new technologies – they're both bullish about cryptocurrencies and decentralized social networks.

Both have also criticized the U.S.'s decision to end the gold standard in 1971 and move to a fiat currency system under former President Richard Nixon.

Snowden, who is now a Russian citizen, flew to Russia in 2013 from Hong Kong. After being notified that his U.S. passport was canceled, he was granted temporary asylum in Russia. Seven years later, Snowden and his family applied for Russian citizenship.
