Chardan Analyst: Microsoft, Google 'Big Losers' In Las Vegas
Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) were big losers at a a recent Las Vegas consumer electronics show, an analyst said Monday.
With about 180,000 in attendance at the annual show, the absence of compelling products from the two giant companies was "perplexing," according to Chardan analyst Jay Srivatsa.
Big winners in Srivatsa's view included video chip-maker Ambarella Inc (NASDAQ: AMBA), which showcased a group of action cameras, as well as the tiny Vuzix Corp. (OTC: VUZI) touting several new partnerships to support its M100 smart glasses.
Google "may want to pay attention," according to Srivatsa, who said Google Glasses have so far proven an insignificant product.
Without a major product announcement in 2015, "Google may have to rely on its search business for a while," Srivatsa said.
Microsoft has already missed the boat for smartphones and tablets, and apart from its Xbox One, the company "runs the risk of becoming largely irrelevant," Srivatsa said.
Other "winners" at the annual electronics show according to Srivatsa were Ceva, Inc. (NASDAQ: CEVA) which could get a leg up in the Bluetooth market with its recent acquisition of Riviera Waves.
Wearable electronics were "everywhere" at the show, and will power a "big growth drive" for sensors and wireless communication products, as well as voice and video-processing chips, like those from Audience Inc (NASDAQ: ADNC), Srivatsa said.
