Musician Michel Martelly Elected Haitian President
Popular carnival singer Michel Martelly won nearly two-thirds of the vote to be Haiti's next president.
While final results will not be announced until April 16, Martelly dominated an election season that was filled with drama. The first round of elections was tainted with considerable fraud, along with the response of a frustrated people -- violent protests. Haiti also suffers from significant social issues, including homelessness and a stunted rebuilding effort following the major earthquake mid-January.
Martelly ran a slick campaign, boosted by foreign consultants, and positioned himself as an outsider and an agent of change. He ran on a platform of education reform, new jobs, and an improved agriculture system. He also wants to reform the land-tilting system, which sees landowners preying on citizens made homeless by the earthquake.
Martelly's landslide victory was boosted by his appeal to Haiti's youth and a political climate that was ripe for a non-traditional, non-status-quo candidate.
