JNJ Extends Recall To Other Over-The-Counter Brands But FDA Says Action Delayed

Share:

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) is expanding the recall of its pain reliever drug, Tylenol, to include popular over-the-counter brands such as Benadryl, Motrin and Rolaids.

J&J initiated the recall of certain lots of these products after there were reports of the drugs smelling musty. Some consumers who consumed the medication from the affected lot also reported nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. However, JNJ said that no serious medical reactions had been reported.

The recalled products, which span Junior Strength Motrin IB, Children's Tylenol Meltaways, Benadryl, Extra Strength Tylenol, Extra Strength Tylenol Rapid Release, Motrin IB, Regular Strength Tylenol, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, St. Joseph Aspirin, Tylenol Arthritis, were manufactured at a plant in Puerto Rico.

JNJ said that the recall has been extended without receiving any consumer complaint. However, officials at the FDA said that Johnson & Johnson had received consumer complaints as early as September 2008, but it failed to take any action on them until September 2009, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

JNJ’s share price has slipped by 1.66% to $64.02.
