FX Renews 'The Americans' For 2 Seasons, Sets End-Date For Series
FX (Twenty-First Century Fox Inc (NASDAQ: FOXA))'s critically beloved "The Americans" is just weeks away from wrapping up its fourth season, but fans can rest assured it will be back in 2017 and 2018. However, there's a twist to this tale.
The network revealed Wednesday that while "The Americans" will indeed return, its sixth season, slated for 2018, will be its last. The move doesn't really come as a surprise, as the show has never been a solid ratings performer. However, it has survived largely because of its critical backing and significant DVR numbers boost.
The set end-date will also give the series producers ample time to bring the show to the conclusion they always envisioned. Series creator Joe Weisberg and executive producer Joel Fields have also signed new deals with FX to keep them in the fold following the show's end.
FX is in the process of re-stocking its roster following the end of such successful series as "Justified" and "Sons of Anarchy." "The Americans" and "American Horror Story" have helped provide stability for the network, as new programs such as "American Crime Story," "Fargo" and the upcoming "Sons" spinoff "Mayans MC" are finding their footing.
