YouTuber MKBHD Gives Thumbs Down To VinFast VF8 As It Has A 'Shocking Amount Of Similarities' With Fisker Ocean: 'But It's Different'

Popular tech YouTuber and automotive enthusiast Marques Brownlee, popularly known as MKBHD, on Tuesday reviewed VinFast Auto‘s (NASDAQ:VFS) VF8 and couldn’t help but notice the many similarities between the crossover SUV from the Vietnamese company and the Fisker Ocean SUV he previously termed the “worst car” he has ever reviewed.

What Happened: Brownlee said in the video that after his critical review of the Fisker Ocean SUV, many requested him to review the VF8.

“It has a shocking amount of similarities with the Fisker, I will put it that way. But it’s different,” Brownlee said in his review of the VinFast VF8 Plus trim.

The EV maker has made several changes in material choices and design to cut costs such as poorer quality vegan leather seats, Brownlee noted. The center screen on the car looks like an old Android tablet, Brownlee said, while adding that it is “a bit odd” and “cartoonish.”

The driver aids keep beeping at the driver now and then an “obnoxious” number of times and the vehicle has a “weirdly bad” reverse camera reminiscent of the 1990s, he added.

“Just not a fun car to drive dynamically in any way,” Brownlee said. “I just wouldn’t recommend this car for right now.”

While Brownlee said that he would still pick the VF8 over the Fisker Ocean, he noted that it is still a bad buy for its price of about $50,000, given other SUVs in the same price range such as the Ioniq 5, Mustang Mach-E, and the Model Y which have better driving dynamics.

Other Poor Reviews: Brownlee, however, is not the only one to review the VF8 poorly. In July, car-focussed YouTube channel Donut tested the car to conclude that the vehicle has “all the annoying things about EVs and none of the good stuff.”

Price Action: VinFast shares closed down 2.69% at $4.7 on Tuesday. The stock is down 33.33% year-to-date, according to Benzinga Pro.
