Thursday's S&P Sector Recap 6/23/11

The S&P 500 traded in negative territory for the entire session Thursday, but finished well off of the lows of the day. The SPX hit its intraday low of 1262.87 at 10:51am, but steadily rose throughout the remainder of the session. The big gain came at 2:55pm when the index jumped from 1268.73 to 1277.17, as the euro spiked against the dollar.

The SPX finished down 3.61 to 1283.50, losing 0.3% on the day.

The Sector Breakdown for Thursday's session is as follows:

The Technology Sector was the strongest performing area of the market in Thursday's trading session, gaining 0.9% on the day. The strongest performing stocks in the S&P 500 Technology Sector in today's action were:

1) Western Digital (NYSE: WDC): Shares of Western Digital finished up 7% from yesterday's close to $37.01.

2) Red Hat (NYSE: RHT): Shares of Red Hat finished up 3.5% from yesterday's close to $45.27.

3) Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU): Shares of Micron Technology finished up 3.2% from yesterday's close to $8.43.

Weakness in the Sector: The following Technology stocks showed signs of weakness in Thursday's session, despite overall Sector strength:

1) Computer Sciences (NYSE: CSC): Shares of Computer Sciences finished down 1.5% from yesterday's close to #37.70.

2) Google (NASDAQ: GOOG): Shares of Google finished down 1.4% from yesterday's close to $480.22.

The Consumer Services Sector gained 0.3% in Thursday's trading session. The strongest performing stocks in the S&P Consumer Services Sector in today's action were:

1) Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY): Shares of Bed Bath & Beyond finished up 5.3% from yesterday's close to $56.93.

2) Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV): Shares of Southwest Airlines finished up 3.5% from yesterday's close to $11.41.

3) Carnival (NYSE: CCL): Shares of Carnival finished up 3.5% from yesterday's close to $37.64.

Weakness in the Sector: The following Consumer Services stocks showed signs of weakness in Thursday's trading session, despite overall Sector strength:

1) Discovery Communications (NASDAQ: DISCA): Shares of Discovery Communications finished down 2.5% from yesterday's close to $40.64

2) Cablevision Systems (NYSE: CVC): Shares of Cablevision Systems finished down 1.8% from yesterday's close to $34.73.

3) CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS): Shares of CVS Caremark finished down 1.7% from yesterday's close to $36.82.

The Basic Materials Sector was basically neutral in Thursday's trading session, gaining 0.03%. The strongest performing stocks in the S&P 500 Basic Materials Sector in Thursday's action were:

1) Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF): Shares of Cliffs Natural Resources finished up 2.7% from yesterday's close to $86.33.

2) Avery Dennison (NYSE: AVY): Shares of Avery Dennison finished up 2% from yesterday's close to $37.78.
