Oracle Names Hurd Co-President

Share:

Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL), the largest maker of database software, has named former Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) CEO Mark Hurd to the role of co-president as part of Oracle's efforts to escalate its competition with the world's largest maker of personal computers.

Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison and Hurd are friends, leading some to speculate that Ellison feel HP treated Hurd unfairly when Hurd was booted out last month.

Oracle has two presidents, but one is leaving the company. HP and Oracle have worked together for 25 years, but the relationship is straining because Oracle is now competing in one of HP's biggest businesses -- selling the computer servers that power businesses' back offices, according to the Associated Press.

Ellison and Hurd are both known for, among other things, their acquisitive ways. Oracle has made $40 billion in deals since 2004 and HP made $20 billion in purchases during Hurd's tenure.
