Report: Amazon To Begin Grocery Delivery Program In India Before April

Share:

According to Mint, one of India's largest business newspapers, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) plans to launch an expanded grocery delivery service across the country as soon as April.

Amazon India soft-launched Kirana Now, a grocery delivery service in a few neighborhoods in Bengaluru last year.

Mint, citing "three people familiar with the matter" reported that Amazon is planning on expanding the initiative into a "full-fledged" business. The publication added that Amazon's grocery delivery service will expand to up to 10 cities across India this year and the majority of orders will be delivered by Amazon's own logistics service.

"Amazon has taken some time to get this ready but once it gets into something, it will ramp up very, very fast," a source told Mint. "Groceries is a very challenging business so it's taking additional time. But now, the processes are almost in place and there's no shortage of money so it won't be surprising if Amazon manages to do well."

Shares of Amazon were trading higher by 1.66 percent at $579.74 shortly after Tuesday's opening bell.
