Tesla Aims To Fix American EV Charging Infrastructure With The North American Charging Standard

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) announced Friday on Twitter the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in a bid to supercharge North American charging infrastructure.

The NACS standard is based on Tesla's already existing charge port. According to Tesla, "NACS vehicles outnumber CCS two-to-one, and Tesla's Supercharging network has 60% more NACS posts than all the CCS-equipped networks combined."

Tesla says the NACS standard is agnostic to use case and communication protocol, as well as straightforward to adopt, with a link to the documentation available directly on Tesla's website.

Network operators already have plans to adopt NACS, which means Tesla owners will soon have even more options to charge in addition to the Tesla Supercharger network that is readily available in North America. 

If competitors produce EVs with Tesla's charge port, those vehicles could theoretically be enabled to charge at Tesla's already established Supercharger network.

Exact release dates for new chargers with NACS were not shared beyond being available soon.
