Trump Ally McCarthy Moves Closer To Replacing Nancy Pelosi As House Speaker

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has won the nomination for House speaker even as Republicans head for a possible slim majority.

What Happened: Should the Republicans seize the House of Representatives, McCarthy will have a shot at becoming speaker and replacing Nancy Pelosi.

McCarthy, the current House GOP leader, won an internal party election by 188-31 votes on Tuesday, reported The Washington Post.

Why It Matters: McCarthy will require 218 votes to become speaker when Congress reconvenes, noted the Post.

The Republican leader reportedly has the support of former President Donald Trump but if the party wins the House with a thin majority, he will still have an uphill task securing the gavel.

Meanwhile, Sen. Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.)l faces a challenge from Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) as the leader of the Senate. Elections will be held on Wednesday, reported the Post.
